Surrounded by 14,000 men in a space built for 1,500, he saw a profound opportunity for service. What began as a personal trial became a mission field. He sat with his fellow detainees—not as an outsider, but as a brother—teaching literacy and sharing the Theology of Work. He realized then that while gates can be locked, the human spirit is designed for purpose and growth.

Based on the proven impact of our literacy and judicial assistance programs in the DRC, Inganji Roots has entered into a formal partnership with the Ministry of Justice in Burundi. In a society where widowhood is equated with impurity, no young man dares to marry a widow, no matter how young she is. These girls, some barely teenagers, are often left with only one path, marriage to significantly older men, often widowers in their 50s or 60s, who are willing to “take them in.”

Others face sexual exploitation, as men approach them not with intentions of partnership, but for casual sex, coercion, or manipulation. With no education about consent or rights, many of these young women don’t even know they have the right to say no.
